Auto Racing Operation

Default Auto Racing Settings are adjusted using the Game Setup menu options.

Warning

While using ORBITS to automatically time your races the console will set itself to stay in laps mode once a race has ended in order to properly display the finishing order of the race. If you wish to swap to qualifying mode right after a race then simply pressing the Lap -1, Lap +1, or SWAP MODE key will allow the console to swap to the qualifying mode. Stopping and restarting the timing of the orbits software may also work to renable the swapping of modes VIA third party data input.

Timer Functions

  • START/STOP: Starts and stops the main timer in Qualifying and Practice Mode.

  • Up/Down: Changes the direction of the timer in Qualifying and Practice Mode. The default direction is set to counting UP.

  • Edit Time: Key in the new time followed by ENTER, For tenths of a second, key in five (5) or seven (7) digits. For example, key in 00524 ENTER to change the clock to 0:52.4. While in Laps Mode key in a lap number less than or equal to 999 to set a new lap count.

  • Reset Time: Resets the time back to the default Period Time specified in the Game Settings menu.

  • Split Time: Captures timer value when key is pressed and displays that time on the scoreboard timer, while keeping the main timer running. Press CLEAR to exit split time mode. While in Qualifying Mode the timer value is captured and displayed on the scoreboard and the main running timer is immediatly reset to zero in preparation for another qualifying lap.

Tip

To show a new split time when split time is displayed, press the SPLIT TIME key again. The split time display will be updated with the new time.

Practice Mode

  • Practice mode will display the default or set practice time on the scoreboard and count up or down accordingly.

  • The main purpose of this mode is to allow for warmup laps around the track.

Qualifying Mode

  • Qualifying mode can be used to manually or automatically (through the use of Third Party Programs) time the qualifying laps of drivers.

  • For manually timing the qualifying laps it is recommended to use the Split Time key. While in this mode Split Time will send what was on the running timer to the scoreboard and reset the main running timer in preparation for another qualifying lap. A lap number and car number will NOT be displayed while manually timing in qualifying mode.

  • When using Third Party Programs in this mode both the qualifying lap time and the car number will be displayed on the scoreboard with the car number being placed in the position labeled first on the scoreboard (note this does not reflect their actual leaderboard position). Furthermore, the console will display the current lap number (if applicable) tied to that lap time. A show fast lap button also becomes available when using a third party timing program which upon being pressed will display the fastest lap around the track ever recorded by the Timing program as well as the car number (if applicable) of the driver responsible for that lap.

  • The Supported third party programs include WestHold and Race Monitor/AMB/Orbits.

Laps Mode

  • Laps mode can be used to manually or automatically (through the use of Third Party Programs) establish a line up based on the order in which each racer crossed the finish line. Each Lap around the track will push the new top ten positions to the scoreboard based on the input from the third party data program in addition to updating the lap number.

  • When using Laps mode to manually enter the race order one must make use of the EDIT CAR and ADVANCE CAR keys to properly edit the race order in addition to the Lap -1 and Lap +1 keys. EDIT CAR will allow the user to directly edit the car number for positions one through ten. ADVANCE CAR will allow the user to advance the position of a car during a race, for example if the advance car key is hit for position three the car number in position three will take position two and the car number in position two will be placed in position three. The Lap -1 and Lap +1 keys will subtract one and add one to the lap count respectively.

  • Note, these keys are active in other modes and when swapping back to Laps mode any changes made by these keys in other modes WILL be displayed.

Tip

After using Third Party Programs to time the racer’s qualifying laps a manual swap to laps mode will cause the scoreboard to display the top ten racer’s car numbers based on the fastest qualifying times. Additionally, if any errors do occur one can make use of the manual entry keys in order to correct it and any corrections made will be reflected on the scoreboard.

Scoring

  • Up to ten positions can be kept track of and displayed on the scoreboard depending on your scoreboard model. Each position (one through ten) receives a car number that is at most two numbers in length. During laps mode these car numbers will be displayed on the scoreboard based on the position they were assigned to.

  • While in practice mode the timer will display minutes and seconds. While in Qualifying Mode the timer will display seconds, tenths, hundredths, and potentially thousandths depending on your scoreboard. While in laps mode the timer will display the current lap number instead.

Editing Car Numbers

  • There are ten total EDIT CAR keys and each key is set to edit the car number of a specific position. From left to right the position tied to each key is one through ten, for example the left most EDIT CAR key will edit position one’s car number, the EDIT CAR key to it’s right will edit position two’s car number and so on and so forth.

  • Note, these keys are active in every single mode and any action performed with these keys in another mode will cause a change in laps mode.

Advancing Car Numbers

  • There are nine total ADVANCE CAR keys (there is no Advance car key for first place since there is no place above first) and each key is set to advance the car number of a specific position. From left to right the position tied to each key is two through ten, for example the left most ADVANCE CAR key will advance the car number in position two to position one and set the car number that was in position one to position two, the ADVANCE CAR key to its right will advance the car number in position three to position two and set the car number that was in position two to position three and so on and so forth.

  • Note, these keys are active in every single mode and any action performed with these keys in another mode will cause a change in laps mode.

Lap Count

  • The lap count is influenced by 3 keys and the lap count setting in Game Settings. While in laps mode the Edit Time key can be used to enter a new lap number that can range from 0 to 999. Furthermore, upon entering the Auto Racing sport the lap number will be set to whatever the lap count is set to under game settings. The Lap -1 and Lap +1 keys will also influence the lap number by subtracting one or adding one to the overall lap number.

  • Note, the Lap -1 and Lap +1 keys are active in every single mode and any action performed with these keys in another mode will cause a change in laps mode. Furthermore, the Reset Time key does not reset your lap number so you do not have to worry about losing your lap count when swapping modes or resetting the time.

Swap Positions

  • The SWAP POSITIONS key is used by scoreboards with alternating displays. If your scoreboard is a model RC9065L or RC9085L then the SWAP POSITIONS key will toggle between displaying positions 1-5 and 6-10 on the scoreboard.

  • Note, this key will not produce a change for scoreboards of a different model type.

Black Flag

  • The BLACK FLAG key is used to essentially delete a car number from the top ten positions if needed. When a black flag is necessary simply press the button and enter the car number of the driver who received the black flag.

  • This will remove that number from the top ten positions (if applicable) on the scoreboard and fill that position with blanks until the next lap completion.

Show Fast Lap

  • The SHOW FAST LAP key is only available if the console is in qualifying mode and third party programs to automatically time qualifying laps are in use. Upon being pressed the SHOW FAST LAP key will display the fastest qualifying lap ever recorded through the third party data program and the car number (if applicable) tied to that lap on the scoreboard.

  • If in a mode besides qualifying mode or if there is no best lap time currently set the SHOW FAST LAP key will not do anything.
